Russian invasion of Crimea turns a pacifist teacher into a deadly sniper. Based on true story.

Mykola Voronenko is a pacifist, hippie-like high school physics teacher, who lives together with his wife Nastya in an off-grid simple house on the outskirts of a city in eastern Ukraine. Because of his easy-going nature, he is perceived as a bit of a weirdo, but he seems very happy with the life he and his wife are living. But things change drastically when political changes begin in Ukraine - after President Yanukovych flees the country and pro-Western forces take over the control, Russian forces with national insignia removed from their uniforms, invade Crimea and the south-eastern part of Ukraine. Mykola and Nastya were unaware of that, since they had no television or phones. When he returns home, he sees Nastya being attacked by Russian soldiers, and soon their idyllic house is set on fire. Ukrainian militia men find Mykola still hugging the dead body of his wife. After burying Nastya they take him to the local militia base, where he, despite his pacifist beliefs, decides to join the Ukrainian army and when is offered a chance, he becomes a sniper.

Ukrainian war movie set and filmed before Russia started their full invasion in 2022 - the story, based on the experiences of Mykola Voronin, a schoolteacher who joined the Ukrainian Army, takes place in 2015, somewhere in the eastern part of Ukraine. The film shows something that people sometimes forget - the war in Ukraine started in 2014 when "little green men" invaded Crimea and took over Ukrainian land. The story itself is not particularly explorative - a pacifist turns into a deadly sniper and is seeking revenge for the death of his pregnant wife. However, through the contrast between who he was and who he became, it shows how the loss of the life you want to live could mean dramatic changes in people. It is not a bad production, just uneven in some places.
