During World War 2 survivors from ship sunk by U-boat climb aboard the sole lifeboat. Among them is German sailor from the submarine, now they have to work together to find a way to survive.
Atlantic Ocean during the World War 2. After their ship was torpedoed by a U-boat group of passengers climb aboard the only lifeboat. They are the mixture of people from different ways of life and with different approaches to the situation they are in. Among those, who survived is a German sailor, who came from the submarine that sunk their ship, but does not speak English. They are in the middle of the ocean with very little supplies and no source of drinking water, so first of all they have ration what they have. The German sailor, despite not being a young man, is quite keen to be in charge of rowing when the wind stops. Rest of the passengers are not as strong as he is, so for them it is a good solution and puts aside their dislike towards the German, after all he was among the crew that sank their ship and force them to fight for their life in the middle of the ocean. Rest of the survivors argue what should be their next move - they are stranded in the middle of Atlantic and the nearest last is most probably one of the Caribbean islands.
Fine example of Alfred Hitchcock’s style - tension between characters, confined space that doesn’t give any chance for a little privacy and death of starvation a real possibility - all of this makes the atmosphere overwhelming. Of course Lifeboat isn’t typical war movie - not like, for example, Saving Private Ryan or The Longest Day - but the emotions and influence that the war had on people are more than real. Plus, of course, it is Hitchcock movie, so not everything is as simple as it seems.
