The life on board of amphibious attack transport ship during the Pacific campaign.
In 1943 USS Belinda, a amphibious attack transport ship, is entering the service. Captain Hawks is a very strict man, who wants his crew to be the best in the navy. And the crew, knowing that Hawks used to be a destroyer captain, is worried that he is pushing them too hard and is overambitious. Soon they enter the action on Makin and next American amphibious landings.
Drama set aboard the amphibious attack transport ship, which were the working horses of American navy on Pacific transporting troops between islands and deploying them straight to the beach with landing crafts. We see the crew training all the manouvers between they will face the beach head under fire somewhere on the Pacific. Later they have to face the most fearsome danger - the kamikaze pilots over Okinawa.
Another American war movie depicting less publicized service during the World War 2 (like The Fighting Seabees or Flying Tigers). Although quite interesting parts of the script were made really heavy handed (like ’Being commander is the loneliest post’ dialogue). Also the emphasis is put on the aboard scenes and we see not much of the on beach actions.
