The last battle of First Anglo-Dutch war - after English navy managed to blockade the Dutch coast and thus cause a lot of damage to their economy, the Admiral de With with 27 ships was trapped on the Texel island. Admiral Maarten Tromp came to his rescue with fleet 100 ships strong, managed to gain tactical advantage over General at Sea George Monck and draw his forces away from Texel, which gave de With chance to flee. Both sides were of the same strength (about 120 ships), although English had bigger and stronger warships and managed to sink between 12 and 30 of the Dutch ships while losing only 2, but at the same time their casualties and damage to their ships forced Monck to retreat to the port, which in practice have lifted the blockade. Admiral Maarten Tromp was killed early in the battle, which lead to de Ruyter becoming new Admiral of Dutch fleet and the start of the reform of that force.
The portrait of Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter, who challenged the English navy in 17th century and saved his country independence during a difficult time for Netherlands.
