Continuation War 25 June 1941

World War II

Continuation War was conflict that broke out after German invasion on Soviet Union in 1941 (Operation Barbarossa). Finland became the ally of Nazi Germany, which was the result of Winter War from 1939, when Soviets have invaded the Finland territory.

Since the Red Army was in retreat Finnish have took the East Karelia, where they started preparations to annect the land to Finland. This included placing many Russians inhabitants in concentration camps (30% of which died of starvation and diseases). Soviet partisans were operating in East Karelia attacking soldiers and civilians. During the Continuation War Finnish forces were given the German military support (tanks, airplanes, guns), since for Hitler it was important to put as much pressure on Soviets as possible.

The conflict lasted 3 years - when the German support was decreasing the Finnish forces were no longer able to stop Soviet invasion and Finland have withdrew from war in September 1944.
