First naval battle of World War 2 involving large warships - the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee was hunted and attacked by 3 Royal Navy cruisers: HMS Exeter, HMS Ajax and HMS Achilles. While British ships were heavily damaged the damage caused by them forced Admiral Graf Spee to seek a refuge in Montevideo, Uruguay (which was a neutral country). British, unable to attack Graf Spee in neutral port, have blocked the way out of Montevideo (since according to international law warship may stay in neutral port only for the time needed for repairs to be made) and waited until German ship will be forced to leave Montevideo. German captain decided to sink the ship before British could attack it.
True story of battle between British cruisers and German pocket battleship that led to diplomatic dispute.
