After success of the Operation Barbarossa Germans have gained vast areas of Soviet Union and thye prepared plans for further moves. Stalingrad was one of their main targets for few reasons - it was important industrial centre and it was located on the bank of Volga River used by Soviets to transport supplies. Taking over the city would mean control over Volga, reducing the production level of Soviet military industry (one of T-34 tanks factories was located in Stalingrad). For Red Army there was another important factor - propaganda. If Stalingrad (which means Stalin’s City) would fall in hands of Nazis this would undermine the morale of whole army (or at least would enrage Stalin).
At the beginning Germans made something that influenced the whole battle - on the first day air raid of 1,200 Luftwaffe bombers changed the whole city into ruins. German offensive reached the outskirts of Stalingrad after almost two months of heavy fights, but their losses were very high - 87,000 men and 350 tanks, which for unit away from supply lines were numbers. Soviets were using Volga River to resupply their forces defending the city, but at the same time they used artillery across the river to bombard the areas taken over by Germans. From that point the close combats were fought on daily basis, as well as the sniper teams operations. Germans were trying to close the siege around the city, but Soviet counter-attack on 19 November closed the the German 6th Army in trap. From that point the German commander, General Paulus, was trying to break through the siege lines, while from the outside Wehrmacht units were pushing with the relief forces. At the same time Luftwaffe was trying to establish airlift supply chain, but the number of ammo and food supplies were never big enough for 6th Army to survive. General Paulus surrendered his forces in last days of January 1943.
Battle was a turning point of whole World War 2 in Europe - Germans suffered heavy losses 850,000 men wounded, killed or captured (including Hungarian, Romanian and Italian allies), 900 airplanes, 500 tanks and 6,000 artillery guns. The Stalin’s pressure to defend the city lead to a strategic success, but the losses of Red Army were also severe - 1,129,619 killed or wounded, 4,300 tanks lost, 2,700 airplanes, 15,000 artillery guns.
