Polish-Russian offensive north of the village of Lenino in the Mogilev region of today Belarus. The battle itself was a part of a larger Soviet Spas-Demensk offensive operation that aimed of clear the eastern bank of the Dnieper River of German forces and make break in the Panther-Wotan line of defences. It is remembered as first major engagement of Polish Armed Forces in the East formed in Soviet Union. Polish 1st Tadeusz Kosciuszko Infantry Division together with Russian army made the attempt to break through the German lines that were fortified and 40 km deep. Poles managed to reach Lenino and repel two German counter-attacks, but suffered 25% casualties and the unit had to be withdrawn. Remaining Soviet forces were too weak to make the breakthrough and the offensive collapsed.
