Vietnam War followed the First Indochina War. The two sides of conflict were communist North Vietnam (supported by China) and South Vietnam (supported by France and later by the United States). Americans were self-confident that the air superiority and the equipment advantage will give them the edge over mostly poorly armed forces of North Vietnam and using only light arms forces of Viet Cong (South Vietnamese communist partisans). But the North Vietnam was well prepared for the war and their knowledge of the jungle warfare and guerilla warfare was far superior to whatever Americans could use in South-East Asia.
The air superiority of the American forces based on land and aircraft carriers, the modern cavalry using helicopters to deploy and retreat forces, the tanks - all elements were on the top level, but not when used against partisans in the dense jungle. The Americans used the napalm bombs that used the chemical compounds to burn the jungle and enemy soldiers, but the attacks often caused more civilian casualties than military. The involvement of China and Soviet Union changed the balance of power - American airplanes had to face the Chinese MiG fighters, often with Soviet pilots on board. The turning point was the Tet Offensive in 1968 - the Viet Cong forces changed their strategy and instead fighting with enemy in the jungle they attacked the large cities, where Americans felt safe. The operation wasn’t military success, but the propaganda value was huge - from that point North Vietnam forces took over the initiative in the conflict. The fights were going on for several years and ended up with withdrawal of all American forces from Indochina in 1975.

After the Viet Cong started the Tet Offensive as a new strategy (attacking the large cities instead of fighting in the jungle), the industrial city of Hue was one of their main targets - over 12,000 partisans were deployed to attack Hue. American and South Vietnam forces were unprepared for such change in the bat...
