Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989)

Soviet-Afghan War was a 10-year-long conflict initiated by the invasion of Soviet Army on the country. At that point Afghanistan, since the monarchy have collapsed due to coup, turned into country full of chaos with many factions fighting for power with communist party People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan taking over the government. They appealed to the biggest supporter, Soviet Union, for help in consolidating their power over country, which lead to full scale invasion of Soviet Army in December 1979. Soviets had no problem in taking over the major metropolises of Afghanistan, but instead of crushing the opposition this lead to a increase in insurgency activity.

From that point Soviets, who brought their best weapons (bombers Su-25, gunship helicopters Mi-24, tanks and armoured vehicles) were unable to deal with mujahideen fighters insurgency, who used the guerilla warfare tactics and were hiding within mountains of Afghanistan. Supplied by the US-made modern weapons they were able to defend themselves against Soviet forces and with time the quick-fix operation turned into long and bloody campaign that drained the Soviet Union budget.

In 1989, on a verge of collapse of Soviet Union, the Soviet Army have retreated from Afghanistan after losing about 30,000 soldiers killed, about 50,000 wounded, 450 airplanes and helicopters, 150 tanks and 1,500 armoured vehicles. It was disastrous campaign for Soviet Union - the guerilla warfare of the enemy helped improve their weapons and tactics, but the losses were high and morale of the soldiers and their families back home were very low.
