Polish-Soviet War (1919-1921)

Conflict between Poland and Soviet Union (also Ukraine) over the land of today Ukraine and Belarus. After regaining the independence Poland was trying to restore the border from past, which means that land in Western Ukraine up to towns of Lwow, Vilnius and Tarnopol should be Polish. After victories over Ukrainian army Poles have gained the control over Lwow, but in 1919 Soviet Union started their western offensive that was aiming in spreading the communist revolution on the rest of the Europe.

The first target for the Soviets was Germany, where unstable political situation was a good ground to start the revolution, but to get to Berlin Soviets would have to cross Ukraine and Poland. All this led to a confrontation that ended when in 1920 Soviet army was stopped by the Poles on the Vistula River. Both armies were about same size, but for Soviets it was just an army on their mission to conquer the Europe, but for Poles it was their last stand and fight to keep the independence. It was obvious that Poles cannot last long, since all the men available were already involved in the fight and there were not much reserves, while Soviets could have brought another army.

Here Battle of Warsaw took place, also known as the "Miracle over Vistula River" - the sudden counter attack of Polish forces that drove a wedge between two Russian forces and led the attack on the rear guard of Soviets. The attack was triggered by the informations gathered from decoding Soviet radio messages and was complete surprise for the Russians. Poles have killed over 20,000 soldiers and took over 60,000 prisoners while losing about 4,500 soldiers. It was a disastrous battle for the Russians and led them to decision to drop the whole idea of invading the Western Europe.
