Irish Civil War (1922-1923)

In 1919 Irish nationalists started the Irish War of Independence in order to break the union between Kingdom of Ireland and Kingdom of Great Britain, which lead to over 2-year-long conflict, in which Irish Republican Army was attacking British patrols and barracks, while British forces were using repressions against civilians as their main tactics. The truce signed in 1921, which gave Ireland their independence back, was seen as a chance to stop the escalating violence, but at the same time some of the Sean Fain and IRA activists saw it as a rotten compromise that meant northern part of the island will still be under British control.

While people were relief the hostilities has ended the agreement with United Kingdom began the split among Irish nationalists - those disappointed with it were trying to reignite the conflict with British to reach all the goals they were hoping the war of independence would reach and one again reunite the factions against common enemy. On the other hand those loyal to new Irish Free State were trying to put down the rebellion as quickly as possible to avoid potential involvement of United Kingdom. The people that fought hand in hand during Irish War of Independence now faced each other in a civil war that lasted for over 10 months and lead to over 1000 participants dead and about 12,000 IRA fighters taken prisoner. The conflict lead to confirmation of the 1921 treaty with United Kingdom and gave support to newly formed Irish Free State.
