The Train: Escape to Normandy (1987)

Categories:

Year 1944 in occupied France, group of French resistance fighters take over the train and heads towards Normandy, where they could be under protection of Allied forces that have just landed. The first step is to leave the station, but German guards won’t make it easy for them, thus we have to grab the machine gun and shoot them while they appear in the windows of the train station (highlighted with the yellow color). Once we set out of the town it is up to us to keep the steam engine rolling - we have to keep the right pressure and speed, but we’re not safe yet.

Since the country is occupied by Germans they will send fighters to destroy the engine, so we have to deal with them using anti-aircraft gun put on the top of the engine. Of course since we are travelling aboard the train we do not choose freely our way - we have to go where tracks go, so we have a map of cities and the railway network to guide us. Once in a while we will have to stop at the stations for supplies, where again we will be attacked by the German guards. Also at the stations we could take control over radio and send requests to the resistance that could assist as in taking over stations. But apart from that the rivers are also dangerous - while approaching the bridges we can be attacked by gunboats.

Classic 1988 Accolade game loosely based on 1964 The Train war movie (starring Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield) in which French Railways workers try to save the stolen art collection from being taken by Nazis to Germany. Simple World War 2 game, similar to Ace of Aces, but in the simplicity it was very gripping - we have to cross whole France to reach safety in Normandy.
