Siege of Rochester 19 June 1215

First Barons’ War

Siege of Rochester was one of the major battles of First Barons’ War, a civil war in England, during which English barons were fighting King John Landlack forces. Taking over Rochester Castle, a strategic point between Dover and London, was first step of the barons to openly revolt against royal forces. King John and his troops of mercenaries arrived to Rochester on 19th June 1215 and after long bombardment that involved 5 siege engines throwing large rocks day and night at the castle the outer walls were finally breached. The defenders have retreated to the castle keep, which forced King John to take another approach - his engineers have dug the tunnels beneath the corner of the keep and collapsed the wall. But the construction of the keep was made in a way that even the collapsed wall did not finished the battle and defenders were able to hold the enemy forces for weeks. The lack of food finally forced the defenders of the keep to surrender.
