Also known as Dutch War of Independence, it was a revolt of Seventeen Provinces (part of Habsburg Netherlands) against the religious hegemony of Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands. Due to his military superiority Philip II easily regained most of the territory, but the northern ares full of swamps and floodplains were the problem for his forces. Few of the Dutch cities were besieged by the Spanish army, but held out and in 1581 established Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.
