Battle of the Little Bighorn took place during the Great Sioux War of 1876, which was series of battles and negotiations between Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne against the United States started with the discovery of gold in Black Hills in South Dakota. The settlers that begun to establish their settlements in Black Hills looking for gold, but the Lakota Sioux refused to cede ownership to the land, which lead to military conflict.
Battle of the Little Bighorn was one of the skirmishes of the conflict, but the expedition lead by George A. Custer and the battle became famous for the victory of Native Americans (thus the alternative name Custer’s Last Stand). Custer was progressing towards the suspected Sioux forces and made a mistake of splitting his forces, so they could attack the enemy in pincer movements, but he ignored (due to his famous arrogance) the informations that Indians have the advantage in numbers (in fact they had huge advantage) and both parts of his forces were surrounded. From 647 soldiers 268 were killed (including Custer himself) and 49 wounded, which means their loses were over 50%, while Indians lost about 40 people killed (including women and children) and about 160 wounded out of forces up to 2000 men.
When Indians close to revolting against US government Major Parrish does what he can to avoid the bloodshed. But he has to hurry since both sides are keen to start the war.
