In the summer of 1942, the arctic convoy PQ-17 sets out towards the Arkhangelsk with vital war supplies. When U-Boats attack, the convoy has to split and a Norwegian crew of a merchant ship has to carry on without any support.
Summer 1942, the situation in the eastern front is dire, the arctic convoys are the last lifeline for the Soviet soldiers trying to stop the advance of Wehrmacht. Convoy PQ 17 sets out from Iceland to Arkhangelsk with 41 merchant ship supported by the escort ships and airplanes. After U-Boat attacks PQ 17, the decision is made to split the convoy and let the ships proceed on their own. Aboard a merchant ship with Norwegian crew, Captain Skar decides to keep a secret the news that the escort ships are being withdrawn and from now on they can only count on themselves. His first officer, Mork, thinks they should just return to Iceland, because without any escort their chances of surviving the rest of their voyage are slim. Skar realizes the risks they are about to face, but makes the decision to carry on, feeling it is their duty to do the best they can to deliver the supplies to the Soviet Union. Soon, the clash between Skar and Mork, who also used to be a captain of a boat, seems inevitable, especially when their position on managing the crew and calculating the risks they should take become quite clear.
Film based on true story of the arctic convoy PQ 17, one of the examples how dangerous the transport of supplies to Soviet Union really was during World War 2. Although based on the true story, the plot is more inspired by the true events rather than on actual events that took place. Despite that, The Arctic Convoy shows the reality of how the sailors of the merchant navy risk their lives aboard often crippled or obsolete boats just to deliver the supplies that were desperately needed in the east. The plot itself and the clash of the characters are less interesting, it is hard to actually get involved in the chemistry aboard the ship. The idea to set the whole plot just aboard the ship was good, it keeps the tense atmosphere of being in constant danger, but at the same time there are very few dangers actually seen.
