Young Werner Holt disillusioned with the Nazi ideals during his service in German army during World War 2.
Werner Holt is young Wehrmacht soldier together with his best friend Gilbert Wolzow they are preparing for the Russian offensive. Holt recalls the events of last two years: when he met Wolzow, how they joined the army, their first assignment with anti-aircraft battery and later the service in different parts of the Third Reich. Over that period of time he became more and more disillusioned with the Nazi ideals that led them to do numerous atrocities during the service.
The East Germany production based on novel by Dieter Noll is in many ways similiar to "The Officer Factory" by Hans Hellmut Kirst - it concentrates not on the war itself as military operations, but rather as attitudes the German people had towards the war. Here we have young and naive Werner Holt, who begins to have doubts about the reasons to fight the war, especially when he finds the truth about concentration camps. Interesting book that was incorporated in German school curriculum.
