Canadian C-130 Hercules crashes on the way to the base beyond the Polar Circle. The extreme weather becomes the greatest threat for the survivors.
A C-130 Hercules is being prepared for the flight to the northernmost Canadian base, beyond the Polar Circle. Aboard the plane, there are soldiers assigned to serve there, but also a few people that plan only a short stay - civilian hairdresser and doctor Wilma De Groot. Captain John Couch, pilot of this flight, had plenty of experience in the area since he previously took part in the rescue missions in the north. As the passengers soon find out, Hercules is not built for comfort - it is noisy and cold inside. The flight is uneventful until they reach the vicinity of their destination, Base Alert. Captain Couch prepares for landing using visual contact with the lights of Alert, but soon after he reduces the altitude, suddenly the plane scrapes a hill and crashes. Hercules disintegrates after hitting the ground, but to the surprise of the crew, 14 people survive the accident. The rescue mission is on the way, but the weather changes into a snowstorm, which makes the efforts of the rescue teams almost pointless. Now, the survivors have to find a way of surviving until help can reach them.
Canadian TV movie based on the true events that took place in 1991 when a C-130 Hercules crashed beyond the Polar Circle. As a TV production, it is hardly surprising that the budget of that movie did not allow making it a spectacular show, but the script also did not provide many chances for the story to shine. It is a quintessentially a TV movie with one familiar face (Richard Chamberlain) and a plot that is predictable and lacks variety. Of course, since it was based on true events, the creators did not have much freedom with the material, but the whole story can be summed up in just a few minutes and the rest of the movie does not add much to it.
