American submarine USS Tampa Bay sunk in the Barents Sea soon after a Russian sub they were shadowing suddenly exploded.

Los Angeles-class submarine, USS Tampa Bay, explodes soon after a Russian sub they were shadowing exploded in the Barents Sea. Due to proximity of Russian bases, Rear Admiral John Fisk decides to send another submarine in the area to find out what happened to USS Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, the only submarine capable of carrying our rescue mission is USS Arkansas, which was left without a commander after the death of the previous one. Fisk chose Commander Joe Glass as a quick replacement. Glass is a bit of a controversial figure, he rose through the ranks until he became a commander, instead of the traditional way, via formal education. Jayne Norquist, a National Security Agency analyst, is suspicious that the explosion of the submarines and the visit of Russian president Zakarin in the area cannot be just a coincidence. On arrival in the area, Glass realizes that USS Tampa Bay did not torpedo RFS Konek and vice versa, which means there are some other forces in play here.

American submarine movie, mixed with some special forces operations, sounds like an interesting start. When you have a look at the cast (Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, Toby Stephens) you might think the creators must have something important (or at least good) to say through the script. But when you start to watch Hunter Killer, it does not take long before you will realise that the cast was supposed to save a mediocre script that follows bitten paths one cliché after another. It could have been an intriguing movie, but it was made about 30 years too late.
