Operation Postmaster 14 January 1942

World War II

British covert operation on island Fernando Po near western coast of Africa. The island, under control of neutral Spain, was hosting a base and an Italian ship Duchessa d’Aosta, which were used to resupply U-Boots operating on the Atlantic. Commando No 62 with 11 men and 4 Special Operations Executives carried out a raid on Fernando Po, which aimed to take over Duchessa d’Aosta and bring it to British-controlled Lagos.

The operation was coordinated so the crews of the ships in the harbour and some of the soldiers from the garrison were occupied on the party organized on land. The surprise was complete and agents manages to take over control of the ship, blow away the anchors and sail to Lagos without any losses.
