Battle of the Kasserine Pass 19 February 1943

World War II

Battle that took place during the Tunisia Campaign of World War 2 - after the landing of American forces in Northern Africa (Operation Torch) the first goal was to take out the Axis forces under the command of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. The clash with Desert Fox took place on the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia, where Allied forces prepared their defence line on the shoulders of nearby hills. Rommel chose the Kasserine Pass as the weakest point of the defences and put his armoured forces to attack the US Army positions. Inexperienced and poorly led Americans repelled the first attack, but during second retreated leaving most of their equipment behind. That breakthrough lead Rommel to the attack on other American units, where he caused heavy losses. US Army lost 10,000 and 180 tanks. After that defeat General Lloyd Fredendall was relieved by president Eisenhower from command of II Corps and soon later replaced by General Patton.
