Battle of Gallipoli 25 April 1915

World War I

The British operation in the Gallipoli was aimed to take over the Dardanelles (strait that led to the Black Sea). The naval operation was a failure - several warships were damaged or lost due to well prepared artillery positions of Turkish forces. British decided to make a landing on Dardanelles and take over the area in land operation. Unfortunately almost everything went wrong and only two small beachheads were established - Turks were well prepared to fight for the area and the surprise attack turned into position fights that lasted over 8 months, during which British have taken several unsuccessful attempts to break out of the beaches, on the other hand Turkish forces spent a lot of efforts to wipe out the opponents. Heavy losses lead British to drop the idea of taking over Dardanelles. Most of the forces engaged in the land operation, and most casualties were Australians and New Zealanders.
