Battle of Mogadishu (also known as Black Hawk Down) was part of operation of American and UN forces that aimed to break the organisation of self-proclaimed president-to-be Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The operation involved the landing of troops by helicopters and arresting several of Aidid’s associates, then evacuation by helicopters and column of armoured vehicles. But the operation wasn’t planned well - the militia forces around the target were far too strong for the operation to be successful. Two Blackhawke helicopters were shot down and three more damaged. The militants armed with heavy machine guns and RPGs forced the Americans to defend their positions over the night, 18 of them were killed, over 70 wounded.
