When Russian czar Feodor died the time of "sad times" (smutnoye vremia) started, when several people tried to take over the power over Russia. False Dmitriy I, who gathered some support, asked Poland for military help to establish his position as czar. Small Polish forces made the "intervention" in Russia and even took the Kremlin castle. The revolution of Shuisky lead to the death of Dmitriy and killing of 2000 Poles, who were the garrison on Kremlin. This later lead to war between the two countries - Poles tried to takeover the power of Russia, one of the Russian aristocrats asked Sweden for military help, which started the national civil war between the factions.
