Battle of Omdurman 2 September 1898

Mahdist War

General Sir Herbert Kitchener defeated the army of Abdullah al-Taashi, the successor to the self-proclaimed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. For Kitchener the battle was a revenge for the death of General Gordon during siege of Khartoum, but from military point of view it was a show of the British army superiority against the much larger enemy, but armed with older weapons.

The 8200 British soldiers plus 17600 Sudanese and Egyptian soldiers took on the Mahdi forces close to 50000 warriors. The artillery, machine guns and modern rifles used by British gave them such advantage that within 5 hours Mahdi forces lost over 12000 warriors dead plus 13000 wounded and 5000 taken prisoner. It was a disaster for Mahdi army that 2 months later ceased to exist after another loss in Battle of Umm Diwaykarat. The losses British side were marginal - 50 dead and 400 wounded.
