Battle of Gaugamela 1 October 331 BC
Alexander the Great campaign in AsiaLast major battle between Alexander the Great and Persian emperor Darius III. Since the defeat in the Battle of Issus Darius was gathering the vast army to finally stop Alexander. He managed to put together army of almost 100,000 men and face the 47,000 Macedonians near the today city of Mosul in Iraq. The battleplan prepared by Alexander was to use phalanx formation in the middle and draw as much enemy cavalry on the flanks. This plan worked and lead to second part of the plan - while the Persian cavalry was fighting Macedonians on the flanks Alexander drove a wedge in the gap between the cavalry and infantry of Persians. This attack again, just like in battle of Issus, forced Darius to flea the battlefield and ended his reign in the empire.
