Winter War 30 November 1939

World War II

In November 1939 Soviet Union have used the shelling of small village of Mainila near Leningrad as excuse to start the war with Finland. The shelling in fact was made by NKVD - Stalin needed just the excuse, not real facts. Soviet Union have started the offensive on military unprepared country - at that point Finland had 32 tanks and about 100 airplanes, while Soviets have send over 4000 tanks and 3000 airplanes. But soon the expurgation of officers done by Stalin and execution of many high officers proved to be huge mistake - Finnish forces with very limited military potential were able to stop much bigger and poorly directed Soviet units on the Mannerheim Line. Even though the Soviets broke through the line the small Finnish ski units were operating on the front and kept setting up ambushed that caused a lot of losses to Soviets.

The war ended with the truce after 3 months, when it was obvious for both sides that the conflict is pretty much stalemate and the offensives are just causing large losses without gaining terrain. Finnish forces have lost about 26,000 people dead plus about 50,000 wounded or captured, out of 300,000 involved. Soviets have lost 125,000 dead and 180,000 wounded out of almost 1,000,000 involved. The Red Army also lost about 3,500 tanks out of 6,500 used, which show how bad the officers were.
