Vistula-Oder Offensive 12 January 1945

World War II

Red Army (assisted by 1st Polish Army) offensive through Poland from River Vistula to River Oder and into the German territory. Nazi forces were in retreat after the Operation Bagration pushed them out of Ukraine and Belarus, also the advance of Allied forces in the west made their situation more and more desperate. Defeat in the Battle of the Bulge made even more German generals believe that it is impossible to defend the vast areas they have gained during early parts of the war. When the offensive through Vistula River has begun it was obvious that the Germans will not be able to stop them - Soviet sent 2,000,000 soldiers, while Nazis had only 500,000 in the area. Also they had no air support, very few tanks available and not enough artillery.

The offensive was a huge and decisive victory for Soviets - they just pushed Germans beyond the Oder River, which was the Polish-German border in 1939, with only several separated points that were still fighting (f.e. Kolobrzeg). In the early stages of offensive Germans begun to empty the concentration camps and sending prisoners on death marches. Ethnic Germans were also fleeing together with soldiers - the Third Reich was about to collapse.
