Slovak National Uprising was an armed insurrection organized by the Slovak resistance against German occupation. The uprising has started on 29 August 1944 in Banska Bystrica, few days later on the request of uprising leaders part of Soviet army (including Czechoslovakian Corps) pushed towards Dukla and Krosno, which dragged the attention of Germans from the insurgents.
Although the Uprising was crushed by the German forces within 2 months and the main target (to deprive the puppet government of power) was never achieved the Germans had to involve a lot of forces into the fights (about 100,000). Also, after the fall of uprising, Slovak partisans were active until the end of the war in 1945, which kept Germans under pressure in the area.
Young Werner Holt disillusioned with the Nazi ideals during his service in German army during World War 2.
