Tobruk was strategic Mediterranean port in Libya, used to resupply the German and Italian forces in North Africa. British forces took over the town in February 1941, but when Axis units were reinforced in March they managed to push the Allied back to Egypt. The garrison in Tobruk was left behind so Rommel could not get supplies again. Since it was strategic point Italo-German forces attacked the Tobruk and cut off the defenders that were consisted of British, Australian, Polish, Czechoslovakian and Indian forces. The siege lasted for 241 days during which Germans tried land offensives, aerial attacks, bombardment from artillery and dive bombers, but defenders just kept their ground resupplied through the sea. The siege was broken by 27 November 1941 when British 8th Army pushed from the east and reached the exhausted defenders.
