Operation Torch 8 November 1942

World War II

In 1942, while being still under threat from German army, Stalin pressured Americans and British to start second front in western Europe as soon as possible, and thus take the strain from Red Army. Americans were preparing plans for Operation Sledgehammer, the landing in France in 1942, but British were against the idea fearing it would be a disaster - not only Germans were well prepared for defence of France, Luftwaffe was still strong, but also they did not believed Allied forces in the west are ready for such operation until North Africa is in the hands of Axis. Americans, who only joined the war did not have experienced commanders, their men had only basic training, their tanks and artillery never saw action. Instead Winston Churchill proposed Operation Torch - landing in the French North Africa - and together with American forces attacking the Afrika Korps from the west.

The operation, although involved over 100,000 landing troops, was carried out almost without resistance from Vichy France, and thus the losses on both sides were marginal among personnel. 14 French warships were sunk and 1 German submarine. Also it was important training for the upcoming landing operations in Italy and later France.
