Operation Lumberjack 1 March 1945

Operation Lumberjack was Allied operation that aimed to capture the cities along Rhein River with a fast offensive move and thus cut off the German armies from retreating across the river. Rhein is wide river, hard to cross, which made the bridges so valuable for both sides at this point of war.

The situation during that operation changed every day - at early stage Allies wanted to destroy the bridges over Rhein and thus cut the Nazi forces from crossing the river back into Germany, but at the same time those bridges were vital for Allies while they were preparing to cross the river themselves on the way to Berlin.

Same story with Germans - they were prepared to blow up the bridges and thus prevent Allies from using them in their offensive, but as long as on the west bank of the river there were German forces retreating they had to try to keep the bridges in tact. At that point of the war every soldier, tank, even armoured vehicle or truck was worth a lot for Germans and leaving behind troops or equipment would be insane.

The operation was a Allied success - they managed to keep take control over bridge at Remagen, which for next 10 days was used to establish beachhead on the other side of the river. At the same time Americans managed to cut off part of German 7th Army.
