Operation Dragoon 15 August 1944

World War II

Operation Dragoon was the landing of Allied forces on southern France, which was part of the larger offensive started by Operation Overlord in northern France 2 months earlier. Opening front in southern France was aiming to drag some of the German units away from Normandy.

On 15th August 1944 American paratroopers from 1st Airborne Task Force and started to distract German communications around Marseille. Later elements of the American 7th Army made the first wave of the naval invasion, but were met by weak defence from Germans. Day later French First Army units landed near Marseilles and begun to push German Army Group G away from the coast.

German forces tried to counter-attack the invasion, but after 3 days of fights general Johannes Blaskowitz decided to retreat and thus avoid being encircled by Allies, which was only partly successful. Out of 200,000 soldiers involved Allies lost only about 15,000, which is not much comparing to German losses - out of about 280,000 soldiers they have lost about 10,000 and about 130,000 got surrounded and forced to surrender.
