Kokoda Trail campaign 21 July 1942

World War II

Series of battles fought between July and November 1942 between Allied forces (mostly Australian) and Japanese army in New Guinea. Japanese were trying to take the control of Port Moresby, the biggest city on the island and strategic port, which was vital for their further plans of invasion of Australia itself. But the New Guinea was covered with dense jungle and the only road that could lead them to Port Moresby was narrow Kokoda Trail that runs through the mountains. Allied forces were consisting mostly of volunteer and militia forces, prepared their defence along the trail, but since most of the men were inexperienced it looks like Japanese will simply break through. But Australians managed to gather over 30,000 people and despite the illness that were spreading among them put a strong fight. Japanese threw 13,000 of their front line troops and marines to push towards the airstrip that was strategic point on the trail, but again using the partisans tactics Australian repelled their attacks. During the campaign that lasted 4 months Japanese lost almost half of their men and since the supplies were very limited begun the retreat. Australian forces were pursuing them and again caused heavy losses.
