Dunkirk evacuation 27 May 1940

World War II

Also known as Operation Dynamo. British Expeditionary Forces in France were forced, by dynamic German offensive towards Paris and the coast, to abandon their equipment and escape to the town of Dunkirk. Royal Navy have organised all kinds of warships, civilian ships and even boats to evacuate as many soldiers as possible. Due to Hitler’s order German forces didn’t try to drive the offensive all the way to the beaches of Dunkirk, which allowed British to evacuate over 300,000 men which made it possible to rebuild the core of army on British soil. Due to heavy German bombardment from air and land the losses of Allies were high - about 53,000 men (dead, wounded, missing or captured), over 200 ships or boats and 100 airplanes.
