On the day Germans have invaded Poland their battleship Schleswig-Holstein, that officially was on a courtesy visit in Gdansk, started to bombard the small Polish military outpost of Westerplatte. What followed became legend for Polish Army - less than 200 poorly armed Poles have withstand the waves of German attacks from land, air and sea for 7 days. The message "Westerplatte still fights on" kept the morale of whole country while German divisions were flooding the land in September 1939. Westerplatte as an outpost was planned to be held for 12-24 hours before the relief forces would arrive from Poland, but since whole country was under threat it was obvious that there are no troops to be spared to help the defenders. Even though they were outnumbered, they kept their last stand for 7 days until commander of Westerplatte, Major Sucharski, decided to surrender due to lack of ammo and high number of wounded that needed medical help.
