Battle of Wake Island 8 December 1941

World War II

After attack on Pearl Harbor Japanese fleet turned to her next target - small Wake Island on the coral atoll, where Marines garrison was located. The news about Pearl Harbor increased the alert among the forces on the island, but with less than 1000 personnel, few artillery units and about a dozen of airplanes there was not much preparations they could make. After concealing the artillery and anti-aircraft guns they only had time to prepare simple foxholes for the personnel. First wave of attack Japanese forces was mainly bombardment from cruisers and destroyers, but American forces managed to repel the attempts of actual landing on the island. Second wave included 2 aircraft carriers and additional cruisers, but again Marines refused to give up and with the well coordinated artillery fire and the warplanes operations they managed to heavily damage one of the cruiser, also to sink 5 ships and shot down several Japanese airplanes. After two weeks of heavy bombardment the garrison had to surrender, but each day of those two weeks back in States media presented informations that Wake Island is still fighting as a morale booster.
