Battle of Berlin 16 April 1945

After breaking the defence lines on the Oder River Soviet army pushed forward towards Berlin. Strategically they aimed to knock out the German headquarters as quickly as possible and avoid any delay in ending the war, but politically Stalin was determined to reach Berlin before Allies would, so he could call himself the one that actually defeated Nazi Germany. Both targets could have been achieved only by fast and risky movements, which caused high number of losses among Red Army.

The situation became even worse when Russian actually reached the outskirts of Berlin - Hitler, hidden in his underground bunker, sent even young teenagers, boys and girls, with Panzerfausts in their hands to stop the Soviet tanks before they will reach the Reichstag. This started the long and bloody fights on the streets of Berlin - about 100,000 people died on each side during the fights, over 500,000 were wounded. The city was in ruins, which made the
fight for each building and every street even harder.

At this point it was obvious to anyone, perhaps except Hitler himself, that the war is already over and there is no way that Third Reich could survive. But fuhrer kept sending the messages to his general demanding offensive actions and pushing enemy out of Berlin, which was of course impossible. The German forces in Berlin capitulated on 2 May 1945, two days after suicide of Adolf Hitler. This was the end of Third Reich.
