Battle of Saragarhi 12 September 1897

Tirah Campaign

In 1897 on the border between India and Afghanistan local Afridi and Orakzai tribes suddenly took over control of the Khyber Pass, even though British were paying them for guarding the pass. Soon after they moved to attack British outposts in the Tirah Valley, with small communication fort Saragarhi as their first target. They chose this target to break the communication between British forces in the area. Saragarhi was guarded by 21 Punjab soldiers, who, while facing 10,000 Afridi warriors, decided to take the stand and fight until the end.

There was no chance they could survive the battle, but nevertheless they took the last stand and faced waves of attacks from Afridi. All of the 21 defenders died during the attacks, but the time they delayed the Afridi forces gave the British chance to move reinforcements and stop tribes from taking over any other forts in the area. All of the 21 defenders of Saragarhi were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit (equivalent of British Victoria Cross).
