Second Punic War, often called the Hannibalic War, was conflict between Carthage and the Roman Republic. In 218 BC Carthaginian commander Hannibal begun his famous offensive towards the Rome, but realizing the Roman power on the seas he chose not to attack directly on the Apennine Peninsula, but through the Spain, where he could count on support of the Celtic tribes in Iberia. He managed to get through Alps with his army (including war elephants and cavalry) and attacked Rome from the west.
