A series of local wars declared against Napoleon’s French Empire by opposing coalitions (that included United Kingdom, Austria, Russia, Ottoman Empire, Prussia, Spain and others). After French Revolution Napoleon Bonaparte made use of the newly reorganized army to stop Austria from invading France, but later, when he started the conquer of the Europe and Egypt, the list of his opponents grew bigger and bigger, up to the defeat in battle of Waterloo.

The first major conflict was with Great Britain, but due to his superior tactical skills Napoleon managed to conquer vast part of Europe (from Spain in the West, today Poland in the east, Italy in the south). Of 60 battles that he lead his troops Napoleon lost only 7, most of them close to the end of his reign. His most fatal decision was offence towards Moscow in 1812, in which his army was (just like over 100 years later Hitler’s army) victim of very bitter Russian winter. The defeat in that campaign caused the collapse of his whole empire since from over 400,000 men he took with him only less than 30,000 survived and were able to face the advancing enemies.

After defeat in Battle of Leipzig in 1914 Napoleon lost the power to protect France and was forced to abdicate, he was exiled to the island of Elba near Italy, but he escaped, returned to France and again lead the government in war against another coalition. After defeat in Battle of Waterloo in 1815 Napoleon was still considered to be too big threat to Europe and was sent to remote island of Saint Helena near southern Africa, where he died.
