British soldiers in the secluded outpost in the middle of Africa have to face the army of Zulus.
Rorke’s Drift is a small mission station in the middle of Natal in South Africa. In 1879 British Army was in the middle of conflict with Zulu tribes and the small garrison in Rorke’s Drift has just received the news that just hours earlier the main forces under General Lord Chelmsford were massacred in the Battle of Isandlwana just 10 miles away. With only less than 150 men Lieutenant Chard and Lieutenant Bromhead must assume that now Zulu warriors will be on the way to attack the British outposts, including Rorke’s Drift. With very limited battle experience they have to prepare the station for the battle, but not even in their worst nightmares they could come up with what is awaiting them. Even before battle the defenders of Rorke’s Drift were low on morale, but when 4000 Zulus showed up, some of them armed with rifles, the situation seemed desperate.
Classic war movie depicting the Battle of Rorke’s Drift where less than 150 British soldiers had to face the overwhelming forces of Zulu with no hope to receive any reinforcements. Films is based on real events, with few small exceptions, like the end of the battle scene that is slightly exaggerated. It is, among such titles as Alamo or Westerplatte, one of the epic examples of last stand battles - we see desperate men trying to survive the situation that in theory gives them no chance of survival. With good cast (one of the first big roles of Michael Caine) and involving script the film keeps the viewer at the edge of the seat.
