In 16th century Korea master archer sets out to save his sister kidnapped by Chinese invaders, but he only has his bow and his skills against numerous enemies.
Night attack of the Injo forces on the castle of King Gwanghae was part of the coup to take over the throne in 16th century Korea. Master archer of king’s forces, Choi Pyeong-ryung, rushes to his house and sends his two young children Nam-yi and Ja-in together with his best friend Kim Mu-seon, to seek refuge outside the castle. Later he dies delaying the chase after his children. Years later Nam-yi grew up to be young man and, just like his father, a master archer and great hunter. His sister Ja-in is about to get married when Chinese Qing forces invade Korea. Nam-yi returns from hunting and finds his friends killed and sister taken away by the invaders. He sets out to find the Qing army and rescue her, but with only his bow he can’t simply attack them. He follows the enemies, who are taking the people that have caught back to China to be slaves, and kills the guards one by one. Jyuushinta, commander of the Chinese forces, realizes that someone is following them and takes few of his best men to deal with it. The duel of the master archers begins.
Just like many other Korean movies War of the Arrows has one big advantage - originality. In a way it is similar to Chinese movies of the recent years with high budget, a lot of CGI effects and presents the real conflict that most of the people outside Asia have never heard of. The script is not very original, we have here typical motives of revenge for the father’s death, the chase to save the kidnapped sister, the David versus Goliath, but the way it is presented is rather original and fresh.
