Story of British officer that took every chance to escape from the Stalags.
Film based on biography of Charles Coward, British officer later awarded Iron Cross, that while being in prisoner of war camps always kept the Germans on their toes. If he wasn’t trying to escape himself he tried to organise mass espace through tunnel or sabotaging the Germans in every possible way. While being transfered to Poland he made contact with people kept in Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz.
The film is kept in rather light atmosphere, showing prisoners of war as they would be scouts in holiday camp, not soldiers held by enemy, but overall is very entertaining.
Since the end of the war there were doubts about some of the claims made in the Coward’s biography, especially about him smuggling himself into Auschwitz and smuggling Jews out of the camp (this part of the biography was ommited in the film). Also some of the stories pictured in the biography and later in the movie could have been taken from events that actually took place, but without Coward’s involvement.
