During German invasion three French soldiers are cut off from their unit and now have to find a way to cross enemy lines without being detected. With a bit of cleverness and huge shear of luck they are on the way for adventure of their lives.
In 1940, during the German invasion on France 7th Company of Signal Corps has retreated to a new position and while they have hidden their trucks in the woods Captain Dumont orders three soldiers to establish an observation post on the nearby hill. Sergeant Chaudard takes Pitivier and Tassin, together they lay down the communication cable and climb the small hill. On top they find small cemetery, where they establish their lookout... while eating a dinner. Meanwhile advancing German unit finds the cable left by Chaudard and follows it until they detect the 7th Company. All of the French soldiers are taken prisoners by Germans. All but Chaudard, Pitivier and Tassin. Since the cable was cut off they don’t realize first that their company has vanished. When they discover whole their unit gone they have no other option than find a way to French lines. Since their supplies are running low they try to get some food from local farm, where a pilot from shot down French plane, Lieutenant Duvauchel, was hiding. He joins them and more or less becomes a new commander. On the way they stop for a moment to get some water in the well, where they are surprised by German armored vehicle. Chaudard and other two hide while two Germans approach the well. Pitivier slips up and gives away their position to enemy, so Tassin had to shot the Germans down. Now they have to move fast - they take the German vehicle, which turns out to be a tow truck with gun installed at top, and they set out to find French unit.
French war comedy set during the Battle of France when French units were struggling to find a way to stop German advance. Three soldiers cut off from their unit try to find a way to return behind French lines while enemy is all around them. As most of the war comedies it is far from being realistic, only loosely based on own experience from 1940 of director, writer and actor Robert Lamoureux, it is not even much of a comedy. Yet, even though it is typical 1970s comedy with sometimes slow pace, not very impressive jokes, it is still fun to watch.
