Japanese army is in a defence and for the first time they will have to fight on their own mainland, volcanic island of Iwo Jima. Americans have all the advantages, so new commander of Iwo Jima has to come up with a good plan to survive the invasion.
In 1944 the situation of Japanese army was tough - they were losing ground, the morale was sinking, resources were on a verge of being depleted and American war machine was getting stronger. Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi is appointed new commander of Iwo Jima garrison, which most likely will be next target for US Marines. The situation of Kuribayashi is serious, he has limited resources available to defend the island and he has to motivate his men to put up a strong fight, because Iwo Jima is part of Japanese mainland and the eyes of the whole nation will be upon them. First of all he changes to whole concept of island defence - while his predecessor was preparing bunkers on the beaches Kuribayashi sees that there is no way to defend them, so he does not want to waste any lives on the beaches. His plan will require far more work, but gives better chance to succeed - since there is no way they can prevent Marines from landing on the island he wants to move the defence lines further inland and be better prepared for the situation in which Americans are already on the island.
American war drama, together with Flags of Our Fathers, telling the story of Battle of Iwo Jima, the last big clash between United States and Japan in World War 2 shown from both sides of the conflict. While Flags of Our Fathers was concentrating on the story behind the famous photo of Marines putting up the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi, in Letters from Iwo Jima we follow few of the defenders of the island from the moment they began preparation for the upcoming American invasion to the end of the battle. The desperation of the defenders is mixed with the stories from their letters found on the island years later. With high historical accuracy and dramatic stories of the soldiers it is quite good war movie.
