American soldier from recon unit learns about gold bars kept in an abandoned bank behind the enemy lines. With the chaos around he simply can’t help the temptation to reach for them.
During the Allied offensive towards the Rhein River Private Kelly of scout unit intercepts German officer, who turns out to be useless from military point of view, but when Kelly gets him drunk recalls something very important. On the other side of the front line there is a small town, in the centre of that town there is a defunct bank, inside that bank there are gold bars, lots of it. Kelly sees it’s the opportunity of a lifetime - he is the only American, who knows it and the bank is within his reach. Of course he can’t just wander into enemy territory all by himself - he needs a team to face the German tanks platoon that guards the bank. Golden bar that Kelly got from the German officer helps him find other volunteers among the Americans ready to risk their lives in a risky venture behind the enemy lines.
War movie made in almost western-like style, which is hardly surprising since the actor playing main character, Clint Eastwood, had a long career in western movies. We have here group of odd characters that join forces in a quest to get the bars of gold from the bank guarded by the bad guys. The only thing that are missing are the cactuses in the background and gringos roaming the area. And actually this idea worked perfectly in Kelly’s Heroes - it is great adventure set during World War 2, very good cast, well written script on a verge between war movie and war comedy. The movie is very entertaining, even despite lack of realism (or perhaps thanks to the lack of realism).
