In 1961 first Soviet ballistic missile nuclear submarine sets out to the sea. The boat was haunted by accidents even before the official launching, which started the grim nickname for it: the Widowmaker.
In 1961 experienced Captain Alexei Vostrikov takes over command of K-19, one of the first Soviet ballistic missile nuclear submarines. His predecessor, Captain Mikhail Polenin, stays aboard as executive officer, but the morale among crew is low. While Polenin is well liked by the crewmembers for taking care of them, the Soviet admiralty lost its confidence with him, thus the sudden change in command. To make things worse K-19 is haunted by accidents that already cost several lives of the crew and the harbour workers, which started the grim nickname of K-19: the Widowmaker. On arrival Vostrikov finds the crew in disarray and the reactor officer completely drunk. He demands the man to be replaced, but the only available reactor officer is young Vadim Radchenko, straight from the academy without any active service experience. Just before K-19 is about to leave the port the medical officer dies in car accident and has to be replaced by the harbour medical officer. After the submarine leaves the port further problems begin to emerge.
American war movie based on true events from Cold War era, the K-19 ill-fated 1961 patrol of the North Atlantic, during which reactor problems lead to very dangerous situation. The events presented in the movie are close to real-life events, although, as usual, they were spiced up a little bit (which was hardly necessary in K-19 story). Nevertheless it is story of dedication and sacrifice in the face of great danger, but at the same time of the Cold War paranoia and example how dangerous that conflict really was. Very good cast, involving story and a very good submarine movie.
