During Cold War American nuclear submarine is sent on a secret mission towards the Arctic glacier, where military satellite have crashed.
During Cold War American nuclear submarine USS Tigerfish commander James Ferraday is given unusual orders - to take aboard British civilian, platoon of Marines, Russian citizen cooperating with NATO and set out towards North Pole. Tigerfish is operating from Scotland, so their trip wasn’t very long, but the atmosphere is tense, which is especially stressful for Ferraday since he wasn’t told what is it all about and who is who in this operation. The Russian, Boris Vaslov, seems very friendly, but at the same time he is very keen to see every little detail of the submarine. David Jones of MI6 is quite opposite - jumpy, suspicious, stays in his cabin and is evasive about his role in this mission. When Ferraday finally is given the destination, Ice Station Zebra, the presence of Marines becomes clearer - they are here to find out if the crew of Zebra station is safe. The reason why they could not be safe is a different matter - military satellite have crashed near the station and US intelligence is convinced Soviets will try to intercept the remains. But when they arrive to Zebra station the story gets complicated...
War movie based on Alistair MacLean novel set during Cold War. A gripping thriller aboard nuclear submarine, where there are more questions than answers that lead to surprising ending, but as usual with MacLean’s novels the way to the truth is hardly straightforward. Very good cast, great atmosphere of Cold War tension and story that is involving and entertaining.
